But in this case, I&#8217;m working on a side project, and I found a solution to a problem I thought I should share.<\/p>\n<h1>Summary<\/h1>\n<p>In InDesign, when creating an index, to cross-reference singular and plural words in a single topic, add both the singular and plural words as separate topics, then rename one of the topics to match the other, and the topics will be combined.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>The Problem<\/h1>\n<p>When creating new index cross-references in InDesign, I select a word in the document, in this case, &#8220;obligations&#8221;, and open the <strong>Index &gt; New cross-reference<\/strong> dialog. InDesign searches on the whole word when adding topics. It doesn&#8217;t perform a partial word match. The result is that only the word &#8220;obligation&#8221; is added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/4-Index-Preview-Obligation.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1439\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/4-Index-Preview-Obligation.png?resize=249%2C608&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/4-Index-Preview-Obligation.png?w=249&amp;ssl=1 249w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/4-Index-Preview-Obligation.png?resize=123%2C300&amp;ssl=1 123w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the results don&#8217;t even include the word on the page I had selected. So I select the word &#8220;obligations&#8221; again, open the <strong>Index &gt; New cross-reference<\/strong> dialog, and click <strong>Add All<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2-New-Page-Reference-Obligations.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1437\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2-New-Page-Reference-Obligations.png?resize=587%2C287&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2-New-Page-Reference-Obligations.png?w=587&amp;ssl=1 587w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/robcouture.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/2-New-Page-Reference-Obligations.png?resize=300%2C147&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now I have both &#8220;obligation&#8221; and &#8220;obligations in my Index Preview, but they are separate entries.
